Redline Book Festival
Children’s Book Illustration Workshop
From September to October 2025 I attended a children’s book illustration workshop hosted by Celina Buckley, the work over the 6 weeks cumulated in an exhibition held in Ballyroan library from the 13th to the 18th of October.
Over the 6 weeks I filled sketchbooks with observational drawings, we started with linework only and moved to tonal and eventually colour. We were tasked with picking a theme and I chose technology, it got a bit loser as time went on but in the beginning everything I drew was focused on either technology itself or people using it. I counted mechanical technology as well so I wouldn’t be limited to electronics.
Line Drawings
Week 1
Line drawings were my favourite to do, they can be quick and spontaneous or I could really take my time and capture every detail I saw. I found that ink pens work best for me when observational drawing on the go, I don’t have to worry about them snapping or leaning a certain way to get the desired effect.
Tonal Drawings
Week 2
This week I was experimenting with new water based tools, these drawings required a bit more stopping and slowing down than the last ones so I couldn’t be as spontaneuos but I enjoyed them nonetheless.
